MEDIA: JOURNALISM COORDINATOR WINS APC FELLOWSHIP

The Australian Press Council has awarded its 1999 Fellowship to David Robie, a prominent journalist and educator whose expertise is in the media of the South Pacific region.


THE Australian Press Council has awarded its 1999 Fellowship to David Robie, a prominent journalist and educator whose expertise is in the media of the South Pacific region.

While in Australia in June/July, Mr Robie will attend and address the first Oceania Regional Conference of the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC) which is being held in Brisbane on June 22-23.

He will also visit Australian news media organisations and address seminars at universities with journalism programmes.

David Robie, 54, is senior lecturer and coordinator of the Journalism Programme at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji.

He has been a journalist and journalism educator for more than 30 years and has been active in media freedom issues for several years.

He has an MA in Journalism and has professional teaching qualifications from the Auckland Institute of Technology.

He is editor of Pacific Journalism Review, on the editorial board of Asia-Pacific Media Educator and Australian Journalism Review, and a co-convenor of Pacific Media Watch, an Internet-based news and information service.

"I am delighted by this surprise and timely invitation," said Mr Robie.

"It is in recogition of USP's growing regional journalism programmes and also provides an excellent opportunity to help our courses and resources by building closer links with leading journalism schools in Australia."

The Press Council fellowship is awarded to those in the media whose experience will be of benefit to the Australian media and who would benefit from a better knowledge of it.

  • Previous winners of the APC Fellowship have been:

    1995: Professor John Soloski, a US defamation law expert.
    1996: Professor Jean-Claude Bertrand, a French academic specialising in the study of media accountability systems.
    1997: Lord Wakeham, chair of the UK Press Complaints Commission.
    1998: No fellowship awarded.
